IAIR Conferences - Forum for Discussion

IAIR members meet annually at a combined Conference and Annual General Meeting.

At these meetings, members:
  • Exchange information;
  • Report on recent developments in their jurisdiction;
  • Engage in discussion about current thinking in relation to:
    • Insolvency policy and legislation
    • Practice and administration
    • Regulatory issues

at both a national and international level; and

  • Consider topics for detailed study and approve study reports.

Observers from non-member governments are invited to attend and to contribute to discussion.

Conferences usually run for three days and include social events arranged by host countries. These events provide excellent networking opportunities and assist with the development of bilateral and multilateral relationships.

External speakers are invited to address conference sessions on topics of interest to members and observers. Past speakers have included the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the OECD.

Annual General Meetings and Conferences are generally closed to members and observersso as not to hinder a full exchange of views on issues which may be subject to different levels of confidentialety.

Wider IAIR Member Roles

The objectives of IAIR include liaising with other bodies and constituencies on common insolvency issues.

Members were involved in a working group that developed the Statement of Principles for Regulatory Frameworks as part of the World Bank’s Principles and Guidelines for Effective Insolvency and Creditor Rights Systems; and took part in Regional Workshops held by the Bank for developing economies in Bratislava and Mexico City.

The next step in that initiative is the development of a Regulator’s Toolkit to provide a practical guide to the design and implementation of regulatory frameworks. IAIR is co-ordinating detailed procedure and practice information from members' different systems of regulation of private sector insolvency administration.

Individual members frequently host visits from other governments looking at introducing or revising their insolvency legislation and regulation. The IAIR web site provides useful information about members' functions and contacts for other governments to follow up, as well as links to members' own websites where more detailed information & statistics can be accessed.
